چکیده

To eliminate the collection of serial samples of arterial blood an instrument has been developed which records dye-dilution curves by measuring changes in optical density of a segment of a heatflushed ear. Comparison with curves from arterial samples shows close similarity in the shape of the curves, and good agreement between the cardiac outputs calculated from them. Other advantages of the technic are the relatively small close of dj'e needed, the linear relation between deflection of the recording galvanometer and changes in dye concentration in the blood, and the fact that determinations can be repeated several times at intervals of three or four minutes.

Value of Continuous Photoelectric Recording of Dye Curves in the Estimation of Cardiac Output

In order to test photoelectric recording of dye curves, simultaneous determinations of cardiac output were made in 48 patients with heart disease with the Fick and dye-dilution technics. The dye curves were recorded with a Colson densitometer following either intrathoracic or antecubital injection of dye. Both Evans blue and indoeyanine green dyes were employed. Satisfactory agreement was noted...

Determination of relative changes in cardiac output from noncalibrated earpiece dye-dilution curves.

Coomassie Blue dye and the photoelectric earpiece" make it comparatively simple to obtain successive dye-dilution curves without arterial puncture. If the response of the recording system is linear to blood dye concentration and the vascular content of the ear is constant, it should be possible to measure relative changes in cardiac output without calibrating the corves. The purpose of this pap...

Measurement of Cardiac Output Using the Photoelectric Earpiece: a Comparison with Simultaneous Fick Measurements.

• Since the early studies by Hamilton, Werko, and Doyle, and their colleagues, a variety of indicator dilution techniques have been developed for measuring the cardiac output in man. The most widely accepted have been those requiring the use of the continuously recording cuvette densitometer." Numerous studies have appeared to demonstrate close correlation of values by the Hamilton and by the s...

Historical Review HISTORY OF BLOOD GAS ANALYSIS. VII. PULSE OXlMETRY

Pulse oximetry is based on a relatively new concept, using the pulsatile variations in optical density of tissues in the red and infrared wavelengths to compute arterial oxygen saturation without need for calibration. The method was invented in 1972 by Takuo Aoyagi, a bioengineer, while he was working on an ear densitometer for recording dye dilution curves. Susumu Nakajima, a surgeon, and his ...

Ear oximetry: a noninvasive method for detection of patent foramen ovale: a study comparing dye dilution method and oximetry with contrast transesophageal echocardiography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Patent foramen ovale (PFO) may play an important role as a risk factor for ischemic stroke and some other neurological conditions. There is a need for low-cost and noninvasive methods for the detection of PFO. This study evaluates the accuracy of two simple bedside tests, the dye dilution method and ear oximetry, in the detection of PFO. METHODS Dye dilution curves and ...
